CMH Snow Safety

CMH Snow Safety

CMH has developed a comprehensive snow and avalanche risk management system which includes procedures for collecting weather and snow information; evaluating the snowpack structure; assessing avalanche hazards in the terrain; and determining an appropriate skiing program tailored to on-the-ground conditions.

    In addition:

  • Each area has a snow safety guide, operating separately from the skiing program, who makes additional observations as required to facilitate informed decisions by the guiding team.

  • Observations are shared between all CMH areas on a daily conference call, and are relayed to the Canadian Avalanche Association, where they are compiled in a daily information exchange (INFOEX)

The INFOEX provides each operator/subscriber of the conditions across western Canada, which greatly enhancing their ability to manage their local avalanche risks. The INFOEX's exchange of technical avalanche, terrain, snow and weather data along with detailed hazard assessments has been continuously operating since 1991.

The information collected from the INFOEX serves as one of the key sources of data and assessments used by the Canadian Avalanche Centre's public avalanche forecasters to produce and verify public avalanche bulletins and warnings. The value of the INFOEX contribution to public avalanche safety is estimated to be in excess of $2 million annually.
