The rise of the world’s first heli-skiing company.
Today, CMH is the largest heli-skiing and heli-hiking company in the world, operating 11 lodges in the winter and two in the summer. More than 7,000 guests join us each year – and most are quick to return.
A Bit of Heli-Skiing History...
Our founder Hans Gmoser, an Austrian emigrant, moved to Canada in the early 1950s to climb the peaks of the western Rockies. By 1953 he was living in Banff, working as a guide in the wilderness surrounding Mount Assiniboine, Canada’s Matterhorn. With a desire to share his expeditions with others, Hans formed a small company in 1959. He named it: Canadian Mountain Holidays.
Hans led skiers and climbers on thrilling mountain treks and longed to reach even more remote parts of the Canadian Rockies. There were discussions about flying higher – and by 1965 the idea was a reality. CMH began using helicopters to transport skiers into the Bugaboo Mountains and heli-skiing was born.

CMH HELI-SKIING TO UNVEIL REFASHIONED GOTHICS LODGE WITH EXPANDED SKI TERRAIN FOR 2013/2014 SEASON
Banff, AB – November 21, 2013: CMH Heli-Skiing, the world’s largest Heli-Skiing operator and the company that invented the sport in Western Canada nearly 50 years ago, announced today that it will unveil significant renovations to its Gothics Lodge, along with a sizeable expansion in its ski terrain in the Selkirks sub-range of the Columbia Mountains for the 2013/2014 season.
The refashioned Gothics Lodge, including an overhauled central living and communal dining areas, will open on December 21, 2013 for the CMH Heli-Skiing season. It will feature new interior design by the cutting-edge Portland-based design firm, Skylab Architecture. This new design concept for the public spaces of the Gothics Lodge seeks to connect the rugged terrain for which CMH is known with a warm, yet contemporarily designed alpine lodge.
Guests of the Gothics Lodge will also benefit from a significant expansion this Heli-Skiing season in the lodge’s skiable terrain, which will add nearly 18,000 acres to its tenure—an additional area almost as large as the three largest ski resorts in North America combined.
13 ski and snowboard must-dos before you die
Three magic letters are emblazoned on the gates to heli heaven – CMH. Canadian Mountain Holidays has been the daddy of heliskiing operations since it started in 1965. It’s made household names of the Bugaboo, Monashee, Selkirk and Purcell mountains – landing zones for metres of snow each winter and reached by the flashiest of multi-million dollar helicopters.
